Key Parameters of Turbochargers
1.Compression Ratio (π)
The compression ratio refers to the ratio of the pressure at the compressor outlet to the pressure at the compressor inlet.
Compression Ratio (π) = Outlet Pressure / Inlet Pressure
P_out: Absolute pressure at the compressor outlet (measured in kPa)
P_in: Absolute pressure at the compressor inlet (measured in kPa)
2.Inlet Airflow
This parameter represents the mass of air flowing through the compressor per unit of time, typically measured in kg/s. During bench testing, it may be expressed in kg/h.
3.Total Turbocharger Efficiency
Total efficiency refers to the ratio of the output energy to the input energy. It is the product of the efficiencies of the compressor, turbine, and the mechanical system.
4.Trim Value
The trim value is a measure of the ratio between the square of the compressor inlet diameter and the square of the compressor outlet diameter, multiplied by 100.
For the turbine, the trim value is calculated by comparing the square of the turbine outlet diameter with the square of the turbine inlet diameter, also multiplied by 100.
4.A/R Ratio
The A/R ratio is an important performance parameter for both the turbine and the compressor.
R (Radius): The distance from the center of the turbine shaft to the center of the turbine inlet (or compressor outlet).
A (Area): The cross-sectional area at the turbine inlet (or compressor outlet) corresponding to the centroid of the above-mentioned radius.
To calculate the A/R ratio, divide the area (A) by the radius (R), and then divide the result by 25.4
